Party unity and history

In his WaPo column today entitled: Patching Up the Democrats , Harold Meyerson goes back to 1968 to analyze similarities and differences between that year's presidential election and this year's.  As much as I usually like his ideas, I have trouble identifying with him in this column.  Maybe that's what age does, but my sense of 2008 differs immensely from 1968.  In 1968 we had demonstrations, a very active anti-draft movement including the massive draft card turn in at the Justice Department the day before the Pentagon demonstration, and many other things going on that are glaringly absent now.  Therefore to compare the presidential elections of the two years we must be very careful to pay close attention to the context of each of them in broad   political terms.  Let us go below the fold and do that.
